Indifferent Rocks Are Rearranged into a Dam takes various - and sometimes competing - understandings of “Interval”, “isolation” and “distance” as its point of conceptual and compositional departure. Taking its title from a line in Elaine Scarry’s book The Body in Pain, Indifferent Rocks… explores different forms of detachment and abstraction present both in the piece’s making, as well as the post-pandemic cultural environment in which it was composed. We were interested in the perceptual limit of comprehending distances both social and musical: between speakers in a room; between partials; between attacks and isolated electronic tones; between virtuosity and fixed media; between performance separated by an ocean to its playback.

The tonal breadth of Lucy’s cello spectra was analyzed and digitally resynthesized as a collection of partials. For the initial analysis process, cello passages of quick fluctuating pitch were chosen. We wanted to break down and approach the sonorous materiality of the cello as a non-musical object.

By breaking down the cello into indifferent materials -only to then rearrange and mimic its musical gestures, we wanted to see how meaning can be divested and then reimbued, with an ear to questioning that precise process of “reconstruction” of meaning: just as rocks are indifferent to containing and holding water “for us” until they have been placed into the configuration of a dam.

By focusing on the minutiae of the sound - “zooming in” - the spectral gaze renders the cello as raw inharmonic material. From these collected pitch sets, the distance between each frequency was calculated to construct a harmonic system by which sound was synthesized. At that point, what form could be given to arrange these static tones, to give them life: does that life require re-approximating the sound of its source, a kind of mimicry of cello as “authentic” source, or is there another kind of life that can be wrenched from these soundings? In oscillating between these two poles we hoped to reframe the listeners’ relationship with a pitched instrument. We wanted to tease the boundaries through which the cello becomes experienced. The simplified synthetic tones, intervallicaly arranged against Lucy’s cello parts are the means by which the distance between cello, synthesis, and sonic meaning are ascribed significance.

Since we were already preoccupied with the uncanny distances between source and output, original and resynthesized mimic - the reductions and slips required in bridging that distance - we felt it suitable to document the multi-channel piece via a simple recording of the abstracted aural gaze of others. Four speakers become two ears, a multi-channel field is reduced to stereo and multiple perceiving bodies in the Friedman Gallery are now simply the back’s of heads, watched by two eyes on a screen.</description>

	Album reviews

BLUE VEIL (Ideoligic Organ 2025)
&#38;nbsp;
Pitchfork - 7.7 album review
“Breathtaking”

Pitchfork - review 8 New Albums You Should Listen To

“On Blue Veil, the British composer coaxes earthy tremors from the cello, turning the sound of bow scrapes and resonant harmony into a languid psychic expanse.”

The Guardian - review

“Guaranteed class from the British cellist’s solo debut”

The Wire - review

“Blue Veil advances gradually through its seven phases, remaining firm and steady at its foundations, while fluttering gently through, radiating unprecictable gleams of harmonic nuance”

The Quietus - review

“More than anything else, its textures evoke a certain scenery: the sun setting, a river flowing, the faces of people passing by. Blue Veil has a cinematic sense of tension”

Futurism Restated - Philip Sherburne’s Record of the Week

“Railton’s intonation studies feel starker and sterner, as well as almost deliriously, superhumanly attuned to the nuances of their vibrations”

Zensounds - interview with pick up on
Futurism Reinstated and First Floor

“Lucy Railton is a British cellist and composer that has carved out a unique artistic space for herself over the past two decades.”

Crack - review by Rrose

“When someone who has mastered an acoustic instrument, as British musician and composer Lucy Railton has with the cello, then uses it to explore the full extent of its timbre via extended tones, I am generally all over it”

Recorded by Kali Malone &#38;amp; Stephen O'Malley, mixed by Marta Salongi, mastered by Rashad Becker. The first release to document the solo cello work of musician and composer Lucy Railton, the 40-minute composition Blue Veil recorded at Église du Saint-Esprit in Paris invites listeners into the realm of precision-tuned states of resonance: states made manifest through Railton’s careful traversal of her cello's most subtle acoustic characteristics as they harmonically interlock with mind’s embodied modalities of attention and imagination. &#38;nbsp;Blue Veil arises out of, is sustained in and finally dissolves back into Railton’s momentary presence with her intimate connection to the cello, a way of hearing that allows for a deeper engagement with harmonic resonance, one that opens a space for immediate encounters of mind and sound. Railton’s exploratory practice of harmonic perception emerges from a focus on the physical qualities of intervallic and chordal sounds, their textural qualities, degrees of friction, and inner pulsations. Composing in the moment guided by resonances within the cello’s body, her own, and their shared vibrational space, Railton moves through Blue Veil by giving sounds what they ask for: sounds of pure texture manifesting as a move through temporal transparency, sounds of rough texture marking regions of dimensionally dense space.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Railton’s creative and highly refined use of just intonation harmony deforms sound's inner movements in ways that suggest a mode of listening that actively supplies imagery of sounds implied or completely absent rather than merely savouring those fully present. This active mode of “listening-with”, playfully and semi-metaphorically referred to by Railton as “sing-along music”, allows listening to reflexively participate in the music’s movement as it gradually passes through richly saturated domains of harmonic imagination. And just as the precision-tuned tones of Blue Veil lose their individuality when fusing multifaceted uniformity, listening’s structures of reference and recognition dissolve into nameless waves of intensity, continuously unfolding themselves upon and merging with the listener.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Blue Veil is the result of a deep exploration of the inner worlds of tuning, an undertaking in turn informed by and emerging out of Railton’s realisations of the music of Catherine Lamb and Ellen Arkbro, her collaborative work with Kali Malone and Stephen O’Malley as well as her interpretive practice in performing the work of Maryanne Amacher, Morton Feldman and others. <description>Blue vinyl, edition of 500 copies. Recorded, mixed &#38;amp; performed by Lucy Railton, newly mastered by Rashad Becker, with an instant download dropped to your account. Printed on matt laminate card stock w/ printed inners, featuring photos by Petter Eldh.Boomkat Product Review:Newly remastered by Rashad Becker for this vinyl edition, ‘5 S-Bahn’ finds Lucy Railton rendering a sublime, haunting impression of Berlin made in early Spring 2020 for our Documenting Sound series of sonic postcards from around the globe. It’s essentially a recording of a world-renowned cellist duetting with the S-Bahn outside her apartment in Prenzlauer Berg, playing with, thru, and against the atmosphere of Berlin in spring during lockdown, capturing a scene that feels timelessly nostalgic, pregnant with an unresolved and restless quietude.&#60;img width="2000" height="2000" width_o="2000" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/57cbed6de89be36dade888d12ac59dd23ea888d807829fc3eeb153709ae77d2a/unnamed.jpg" data-mid="135483010" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/57cbed6de89be36dade888d12ac59dd23ea888d807829fc3eeb153709ae77d2a/unnamed.jpg" /&#62;‘5 S-Bahn’ was completed in April 2020 as a part of the 'Documenting Sound' cassette series, initiated by Boomkat just at the moment when the whole year ahead was falling away and lockdown had firmly come in to place. The invitation made the early shock a little more bearable and for a while, it helped bypass the first creative lulls that threatened to define the months ahead. It also started a process of familiarisation with the location I am living in and with the dialogues we have - consciously and subconsciously - with our environment.

On the other side of our backyard wall is Berlin’s main railway line, the Ringbahn. A train passes the apartment block about twenty times an hour, drowning out our conversations and waking us up at night. It is a communal annoyance you learn to love. It structures the shape of this place and enforces a rhythm. I’ve always been glad of these interludes, they provide rich listening material that heightens an otherwise peaceful sonic space. ‘5 S-Bahn’ is my attempt to inscribe part of my sonic location and my own position within it.
By accident this is the second time I’ve ended up living by a busy train line. The first was in Hackney Wick in London. I was short-term living on my own in a studio with an industrial window wall that pretty much touched the safety rails of the train platform. I saw legs, dogs and the Overground Line for most of the day. It was strange being the bystander of a scene like this - what people do on platforms - I got used to their waiting and escaping. Sonically though, things were their best at night. Then it was Maersk and Delphis and other blurry cargo containers, momentarily paralysing us tenants as the noise of the passing freights peaked, sometimes in awkwardly long sustains, long enough that you could fall back to sleep inside them. These sonic treats were (almost) a comfort and, for us neighbours, these freight tremors brought a kind of communion as we endured their assaults together in our sleep, a bizarre way for us to connect, though I might have been the only one to romanticise them in this way.
In Berlin, the setting isn't as intense. Here, there's a distance and a wall separating the backyard and the tracks. I have to climb it to mount the recording equipment. Over the wall, I learn the look of the garage, the church, the rows of Maple trees, the tracks, a playground and the graffiti. Up here, the traffic on Schoenhauser Allee is more pronounced and the deep hum of the city funnels in along the tracks. The machines and people who had been in our ears all this time are now visible.&#38;nbsp; Pressing record I start the process of learning this space and its articulations, hearing it washed out over and over again by the train’s intense interruptions. I wash out with it too, listening from inside my apartment with my headphones on, playing along, singing along, in duet with the tones and frequencies of this space and the organic shapes of its drama. There is so much music already here, maybe this is a collaboration or a dedication of some sort. I find myself admiring its virtuosity and its personality: relentless, seductive, beautiful in all its variation. By taking part in collaboration, I learn and absorb the character of the other, and through the sitting process, I find new shapes and tonalities and temperaments.
This record is a kind of five-part sharing of that learning. It was recorded on April 6th and 7th, 2020, from the wall of our backyard in Berlin. Cello and voice recorded indoors at the same location. Special thanks to Boomkat, Shlom, Petter, Deutsche Bahn and my neighbours on Lychener Straße.
Recorded, mixed, performed by Lucy Railton.
